Staying On StationRumor down here in Gloucestershire is that you have been stopped from staying on station between shifts, is this true?
Cheers

As I understand it the official line has always been that you can't stay on the station between shifts without the specific permission of the Area Commander (as far as I'm aware the note that details this has not been updated for a considerable amount of time-hence the term 'Area Commander'). This permission pertains to the very occassional stay- not permission to use the fire station as a roof over your head for months or years on end.
This ruling is relaxed in times of inclement weather or when public transport is unavailable; although I expect the argument would be that the Area Commander grants carte blanch permission in these instances.
However, we all know the reality. With London Firefighters travelling from places as far afield as Poland and France (really) to come to work what choices are available other than a mattress on the floor?
There are some stations where the ruling mentioned above has been enforced and Firefighters are excluded from the station when not on duty. These recent rulings seem to be brought in following some misdemeanor or other supposedly committed by an off duty firefighter staying over. The rumour mill has suggested recently that this ruling will be extended Brigade wide.
However, I wonder how much stomach for that fight senior management really have. What duty of care would the employers be demonstrating if off-duty personnel took to sleeping on the streets? After all, who can afford a hotel between shifts? And how could a public, en masse ruling be made in the case of firefighters between shifts when accommodation is provided for Station Managers performing a 24 hour duty that live outside their area?

Parking on stations is going to get worse, they have banned anyone not on duty from Wembley . This was due to problems after a big football match where firefighters actually trashed some of the station after they were allowed to park there for the match.
We are our own worse enemy's, do us a favour and we'll kick the arse out of it till they take it off us. We'll then bitch about how unfair the brigade's being.

Well the DAC (now) who banned it has now moved onto a neighbouring borough / area. His initials are I.H. Nuff said.

I been working in that area recently so just wondered if it on of the officers I been working with. Going from those initials it wasn't.
Although, I never even saw the beds at Finchley so wouldnt have been surprised if Barnet had lost them altogether. Admiteddly, I wasnt looking to hard for them
