Smoke sweeps across central London skyline

More than 100 people have been evacuated after a large fire broke out in a historic area of central London.

A London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesman said 12 fire engines were sent to the blaze in an office block in Bream's Buildings, Chancery Lane, at about 3.40pm.

Around 60 firefighters were at the scene where the fifth floor and roof of the building housing the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal was ablaze.

An LFB spokesman said there were no reports of anyone trapped in the fire.

He added they believed there were gas cylinders on the roof of the building which was undergoing refurbishment.

One eyewitness described ‘a huge black plume of smoke’ rising into the sky as fire engines rushed to the scene.

I saw that when I was out struggling to make a few quid in the cab.

No doubt I'll spend this weekend trying to recover our gear from the OSU that was left there.
