Response Make UpHi Guys,I am very familiar with the FDNY's response matrix but I am always trying to find out how it is done in other cities. In New York City, if I was the officer in a single pumper response (or just the first unit on the scene) discovering a fire on arrival I would transmit a 10-75 signal for a working fire. The dispatcher would alter the assigned response to three engine companies, two ladder companies, a squad company (an engine apparatus carrying truck company tools and a crew trained for rescue duties); a heavy (techinical) rescue company; and a battalion chief. The next level would be an 'All Hands' (7-5) signal which would add a second battalion chief and the duty deputy chief in the division. Okay, now what would respond when an officer in London says "Make Pumps 4" or "Make Pumps 8" for example? Thanks for putting up with my curiosity. :?: |

Firstly welcome to the web site, I hope you enjoy. London has a different approach in some respects but also similar in others.
Depending upon the call a response is made, to a domestic fire London sends 2 pumping appliances, for high rise residential properties we now send three. If whilst the initial crews are travelling to the incident control receives a number of calls to the same address they will dispatch more appliances usually 2. Upon arrival the officer in charge will decide if more units are required, if they are a “make up” message is transmitted to control. This will indicate the number of appliances required including those dispatched on the initial ordering. This message can include the request for specialist appliances as well. The normal fashion in London is to make them either 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, or 20 pumps required. For Road traffic Accidents we send 2 pumping appliances one of which is carrying RTA equipment and a Fire Rescue Unit.
