Internet accessI'm lucky enough to have access, but had to fight to get it. (Not literally)
Can anyone answer as to why the Internet is restricted given that it's 2008., and you can now surf the web from a mobile phone or whilst waiting for a Big Mac?

how did you get the full access?
And to answer your question its cos we still have personnel who can't get it into their thick heads there is stuff you shouldn't look at on the firms computer system.

Bullshit and Bluster and the need to print maps and directions off for out of London shouts, like the floods last year.

I believe that internet access for all is now in its final stages, so the rumours go, I hate having to tell people that I have to remove their internet access just because they move stations (and before you ask, I can't sneak it on either!!!  )

I have the internet access, its the stoopid bloody filter that the brigade use. We should all be adult enough to filter our own access, and if not then sack the buggers

GBC, here's where we agree. Why all users weren't given internet access when the filter was introduced God only knows. It's almost impossible to view inappropriate material now....I know because I tried to access some sites concerning the Holocaust when I was doing my degree and they were blocked. Nazi Germany is a good segue actually. Hitler sought to limit access to material he considered subversive in much the same way that the Nanny State that is the Brigade excludes the majority of the workforce from electronic information.
That said, with a reaonable Station Commander it's pretty easy to gain internet access now. The magic words 'Community Safety' usually smooth the way.

Trouble is if we are honest, how many blokes are going to F*"k it up? You just know someone some where is already trying to work out how to get around the filter. How many blokes who already have internet access actually use it for "Community Fire Safety"? Often its fantasy football, e-bay, booking cheap flight etc etc.
Its hard enough as it is trying to get on to a computer, four officers only three terminals. Still now Station Officers are taking a pay cut, I will be doing less work on the computer. I have not received training in the various different programs that we use every day, so that will free up one terminal.

Point taken, Ian.
My frustration over the loss of £350.00 this year is as strong as yours. It's bad enough that this government have disguised the real rise in the cost of living and the whole op workforce, with a 2.45% pay rise, are gonna be worse off. But by losing £350.00 a year on top of that those of us that held the Station Officer rank are gonna see a real change in our lives.
Best make good use of the internet access and e-bay!!

Hey Dave
we've got a guy in the team that was £2 a year better off here with the old pay scheme but because he's lost his protected pay he's £182 worse off as a WM (D) than he would be as a CM with his CPD back at station.
They wonder why they can't temp anyone into training
