Lambeth Borough Commander Martin Blount has been presented with a borough-wide Civic Award from Lambeth Council in recognition of his service to residents. Martin was presented with his award at a special ceremony in the Council Chamber of Lambeth Town Hall on March 26.
He has been the borough’s fire commander since 2001 and during this time there have been major improvements in community safety. Martin has driven forward a large number of initiatives aimed at reducing fire deaths and injuries. For example, Lambeth Council is on track to fit over 10,000 smoke alarms on behalf of the Brigade in a substantial partnership deal.
In the seven years Martin has been the borough commander, the number of calls attended in the borough annually has fallen by almost a quarter from 7,658 in 2001/02 to 6,273 in 2006/07. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Tony Bryant said: “It is fitting that Martin’s substantial contribution to community safety in Lambeth over the years has been recognised in this significant way by the local authority.”
