My name is Matthew McConnell, im from abbeywood in london. Im 16 years of age and it is my life long ambition to be a firefighter for the london fire brigade. Obviously due to my age I cannot join yet

I have just finished at school and im looking to start a job. Are there any jobs or anything I can do to help my chances of becoming a london fire fighter? its been my dream and ambition from since i can remember.

Ive been hovering the forum for a few months now and finally decided to join. so there, thats my first post

Hello Matt,

I have spoken to a few fire fighters around london and they have said the same that there are no Jobs to actually help you get into the Fire Brigade, but if you do end up joining make sure you know another trade e.g Plumbing, Electrician, Roofer

I could think of a few that would assist you in becoming a councillor on the LFEPA, but sadly they're probably not printable in 2008.

Hi Matt,

I've just left school too and am 16, and also have a life long ambition to become a firefighter.
I've asked a few firefighters and the recruitment people and they've really said keep fit, do vuluntry/charity and any community based work (especialy with all the new fire safety things the LFB are doing), maybe Duke of edinburgh award? A lot have suggested becoming a Life Guard as it give's you some experience of first aid and you have experience where think on your feet and may save somones life and i think theres a section in the application form where you have to write about being in a stressful situation where you've resolved it, so could be useful there and in the interview.

Theres also a lot of good information on http://www.fireservice.co.uk/ in the recruitment section, and i've bought a book "How to pass the firefighter selection process", which looks helpful.

Hi Matt,

I'm currently in my first year of the two year public service course and its very enjoyable and interesting. I'm the only one of a few people who have come straight from school and most will be 19 or 20 by the time they finish like you will be. As you may have heard it can be hard to get into any of the emergency services at 18, so this isnt too much of an issue.

The course also includes alot of physical stuff (we have four hours of very intensive circuit training a week) which is certainly helping me to improve and I'm sure will come in very useful in both the entry tests and life in the fire brigade. In addition to the course I've also got a job at the local Sainsbury's, not the most exciting or well-paying job but its keeping me busy at evenings and weekends and earning money, and gives you experience of working with the public etc.

So I'd certainly recommend taking a look at the course, I'm sure you'd be able to book an informal chat with one of the tutors from your local college to help you decide if its for you. Let me know if you want any more information, feel free to email if you like: londonfiresite@yahoo.co.uk

Im just in a bit of a bummer at the moment because Im not able to start the course until next september, so I need to find something to do for a year!
