I am after some serious advice on how to get a piece of equipment issued to fire fighters.
I believe the line rescue and water rescue teams should be issued with ALP type sun/safety glasses. I am at the moment being given no or little help to get this mission off the ground.
I would have imagined it would be easy enough to tell my boss that the teams don't get issued with them and ALP, Boat and HVP crews do and he'd say great idea! and the wheels would be put in motion.
So where do I start and what do I do, any help would be great especially how to right a report in the correct manor and where it goes to

Blaze its not an op note problem. The swift water trained personnel have the possibilty of being in the boat just order the glasses. You will only get the cheaper ones, its a H & S issue from the reflection from the water. We had no problem getting glasses

Hi Red,
It seams a problem because I am in the FRU training dept and my boss has told us the Op note or which ever one that deals with who wears eye protection doesn't say the swift water guys are allowed them so we can't have them!! I'm assuming you've got the ALP glasses,
What station you at?

First step was to order some sunglasses for the ALP guys but as they already had some, the glasses ended up with the FRU guys. Now whilst that is ok and solves an immediate problem its not the way it should be.
I would imagine your reasons for line crews having sunglasses are on the grounds of reflection from an object causing visual problems whilst dangling off a line?
If this is the case then you need to go down the Health and Safety route. Talk to someone from Health and Safety about your concerns, yea you might have to write a few lines but once it’s been brought to their attention they have to do something about it.
If your reason as solid and proven they will issue a notice informing all line operators to order glasses blah blah and at a future time the Management note will be amended to show line crews as people entitled to wear sun glasses whilst working. There is no easy or quick way but feel this is perhaps the quickest way you will get this problem resolved.

Blazing my sentiment exactly. We now have very professional rescue teams lets treat them appropriatly. Although I'm getting quite a collection of dark glasses, ALP, boat and USAR, a nice line pair would complete the set
Before we get the glasses however lets get some better PPE for line, like the new USAR PPE. Its very visable and light. I understand that during the trails the USAR PPE was looked at for FRU crews for technical rescue

the good thing is, the letter or op note that accompanies the PPE says at the very bottom that this is for USAR only 'at the present time' so hopefully this will be rolled down to FRU personnel.
As I haven't had a good look at the PPE I can't comment on how good/bad it is though. Its gotta be better than firefighting gear

OK
the question is who agrees that we need these items, theres no point in trying to sort out a 'mess' when people think one doesn't exist.
So come on, who's gonna stick their necks above the parapet
